284,768. Clayton Wagons, Ltd., and Wells, F. W. Nov. 3, 1926. Sand and like distributers.-Apparatus for distributing sand &c. on roads comprises a hopper body e fitted near its discharge outlet with two coacting feed rollers k provided with projecting blades s and adjustable vertically to regulate the delivery of the sand &c. In trailer apparatus the hopper e is mounted on a wide and low fourwheeled frame a provided with a front swivelling underframe band a. draw-bar d. The angle of slope of the double sloping bottom g is rather greater than the angle of repose of the sand, and the outlet h extends right across the hopper. The shafts k are geared together by spur wheels m and are driven from the rear axle by chain gearing n and a clutch. The arrangement is such that the rollers mav move away from one another at their upper sides as they rotate and the material does not pass between the rollers but between them and the hopper. Within the hopper the rollers are of square, hexagonal, of other angular shape with a projecting longitudinal plate s fixed on each side. The rollers and plates are arranged so as to release sand on each side of the hopper alternately while. it is retarded on the other side. The bearings for the roller spindles are arranged in blocks u movable vertically in guides v by means of screws w, or wedges &c. A hood may be aranged over the feed rollers as indicated. The outlet h may be provided with a detachable cover and the lower parts of the hopper may be renewable. The machine may be sell-propelled. In wider appara. tus the front wheels may be omitted and the frame a extended beneath a tractor and detachably and universally jointed to it.
