To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LINzInA. GARDINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dry Ridge, inthe county of Grant and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road- Building Machines, of whichA the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' My invention relates to machines for building or resurfacing roads, and. has for its object to provide such a device with a stone crusher and a self-feeder, whereby the stones are readily reduced to the proper size.
A further object'of the invention is the use of a screen for separating the crushed stone of the desired size from the smaller stones, and also togprovide means for con veying the smaller stones or screenings to the side of the-road, and other means for carrying the larger stones to the rear of the machine.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a spreader drawn by the apparatus and into which the stone is fed; the spreader being vertically adjustable so that the stone ma be laid to the required depth.

Referring to the drawing more in detail, the numeral lfdesignates the tractor to which is attached the spreader 2 by means of the cable 3.
Mounted on the forward end of the tractor 1 is a stone crusher which comprises a pair of jaws 4 and 5, the jaw 4 being rendered adjustable by means of the wedgeshaped member 6, slotted plate 6", and screw 7. The jaw 5 is pivotally mounted at 8,.and is oscillated on its pivotl by means of the eccentric rod 9 and eccentric 1()a on shaft 10. Just below the jaws 4 and 5 I have provided a shaft 11 on which is mounted the steel sleeve 12 formed with the radially extending fingers 13. The sleeve 12 is secured to the shaft 11 by means .of the key 14 and setscrew 15, the pur ose of this shaft and fingers being to brea up any stones which are too small to be engaged by the jaws 4 and 5.

A hood 56 envelope, the upper'end of the conveyer and4 aids in directing the screenings into a chute 57. The chute 57 is preferably rendered `extensibleby the use of two sections.

is rotated by means of a crank 62 and is heldin the desired position by means of the pawl and ratchet 63 and 64. The conveyer 53 1s supported from the frame of the machine by means of thearms 65 which are hinged at 66 in order'that when moving the machine the conveyer `may be moved into a substantially vertical position by swinging the upper end toward the machine and may be he din such position by the hook and eye 67 and 68, ork other suitable n n largetopass throu h the perforations 33 and 34 pass through te `open end 70 of `the screen and gravitate to the bottom of chute `71, where they are picked upby the buckets of the conveyer 73 and dropped intoahefpivod shuts-:74.
The conveyer 73 is operated by means of `the sprockets" 75,y the upper 'end of the conveyer being enclosed by the hood 76 which is supported from the main framework of the apparatus by means of the adjustable arms 77.
The motive power for moving the machine and also for operating the various parts'of the mechanism consists of a motor 80 mounted onthe top of the framework of the machine and geared tothe wheels 8l by means ofchains 82 or other form of gearing. The self-feeder ,'16 is operated from'the motor by means of thebclt 83 and pulley 19. Chain 84 transmits power from the motor to the sprocket 84a and shaft. 11 which forms the auxiliary stone ciu'sher. A belt 85 is mountedon the pulley 86 on the shaft 10. Pulley 86 also transmits power tothe conveyer 73 by means of the sprocket wheel 816iiL and chain 87. Shaft 10, by means of the bevel geais 90 and 91, operates the vertically extending shaft 92, which, through suitable worms'93-94 and worm wheels and 96operates the shaft 98, which `is connected by the universal joint 99 with the yshaft 41, and also operates the sol 101 Ifor disconnecting the motor from the i various mechanisms. This clutch is operated by means of the `bell-crank lever 102 pivoted to the framework of the machine,'as shown at 103, and normallyheld in operative position by the spring `104.
The spreader 2 which is drawn bythe vapparatus by means of the cable 3 is a substantially rectangular member having each vof its sides formed of two members 110 and 111, adjustable vertically by means of the slot and bolt connection 112 and 113. The lower members 110r are provided `with metal runners 114 formed with inwardly extending anges 115. The purpose of the flanges 115 is to engage under the crushed stone and thereby hold the spreader down in its proper position. The rear end of the spreader is composed of two members 116 and 117 adjustably connected by means of the slots 118 and bolts 119. By means ofthe adjustments just described the stone may be laid to any depth desired and will be leveled of to the proper depth by means of the adjustable cross member 117. i
In operation, the screen 30 and spreader 2 are adjusted to the proper positions for the immediate work to be done. As the clutch is let in the. various mechanisms will be put in operation, the stone which is loaded onto the self-feeder being carried to the Crusher, and thence througlithe screen 30.*"After passing through the screen the screenin s or finer vmaterial is carried to the side o the road by the buckets 52, While the larger stones are carried by the conveyer 73 and chute Tet to the spreader 2, Whlch spreads the stone in a uniform layer to the depth for which it is adjusted.

have described what I now believe to be the best embodiment of the invention, but I do not wish to be understood thereby as limiting myself o1' the scope of the invention, as many changes and modiications -may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention; all such I .aim to include in the scope ot' the appended claims.

l. A. road building machine including a vehicle, a stone crusher mounted thereon, a conveyor extending from the stone crusher to a point beyond the body of the machine,
means for permitting vertical adjustment of one end of the conveyor, a screen extending longitudinally of the vehicle and cooperating with said stone Crusher and adapted to separate the material into two grades, means for raising and lowering one end of said screen, a spreader, means for conveying one grade of material into the spreader, and nieans for conveying the other grade of material to the side of the road.
2. A road building machine including a vehicle, a stone crushcr mounted thereon,
means for conveying stone to the crusher, a screen extending longitudinally of the vehicle and cooperating with said stone 'Crusher and adapted to separate the material into two grades, means for raising and lowering one end of said screen, a spreader, means for conveying one grade of material to the spreader, and means for conve ing 'the other grade of material to the side o the rear end of the screen, means for conveying a portion of the screened material to the road, and other means for conveying an other portion of the screened material to one side of the road.
4. A road building machine including a vehicle, a stone lcrusher mounted thereon, a screen extending longitudinally of the vehicle and cooperating with said stone Crusher and adapted to separate the material into two grades, means for raising and lowering one endof the screen, a conveyor projecting rearwardly from the vehicle, and a chute cooperating with said conveyor and `adapted to direct the conve ed material to selected positions on the rca bed.
