Abstract
284,678. Hulin, P. L. Feb. 3, 1927, [Convention date]. Electrolytic furnaces.-In a furnace for the electrolysis of chlorides or other compounds of light metals such as magnesium, calcium and glucinium, the cathode comprises a number of suspended rods which are cooled at their upper ends The cathodes shown consist of rods D secured co a water-cooled ring E of copper, iron or steel, which mav be made in sections. A cathode with a solid copper ring E is also described. Fig. 6 shows rods which may be adjusted to maintain the distance between the anode and cathode constant as the anode wears away. The cooling effect results in the formation of a light crust on the surface of the bath around the rods, and lessens the action of the chlorine on the rods. The globules of magnesium leave the rods below the surface of the bath, the action of the chlorine on the metal being reduced thereby. A cathode rod may consist of an iron sheet closed at the bottom and containing a core of copper alloy extending beyond the upper end of the sheath.
