Abstract

Walls.-In a boiler furnace wall having cooling- water tubes 1 passing through it the spaces through which the tubes pass are rendered fluidtight by vertically slidable metal plates 10, 11 allowing free expansion and contraction of the. tubes. The tubes 1 are brought out of the com. bustion chamber 2 by round elbows, and the load upon the wall above the tubes is taken by angleiron members 3 and cast iron boxes 4 in which air circulates, supported at intervals by brackets 6, 7 resting on a beam 9 forming part of the furnace structure. The tubes in groups of three extend through the loose plates 10, 11 joined together by bolts 12 and comprising grooves containing asbestos packing 15. The plates 11 are slidable between the brackets 7 and plates 16 secured to the brackets 6 while the plates 10 are guided between the brackets 7 and abutments 18 formed on the boxes 4. The metal structure is insulated from the combustion chamber by filling 20, bricks 21 - - 23 and light blocks 28 which straddle each of the tubes and follow their movements, being guided in grooves formed in the wall above the tubes. Tenons 8 on the boxes 4 engage in grooves in the brackets 7 and the parts are arranged so that the tubes can be removed and replaced without demolition of the wall.
