Abstract

1,117,008. Steam generators. BABCOCK & WILCOX CO. 30 Sept., 1965 [2 Oct., 1964], No. 41482/65. Heading F4A. [Also in Division F2] To reduce leakage of combustion gases containing solid particles through furnace walls or partitions through which boiler tubes 37 slidably extend, the tubes have baffles 60 in a chamber in the partition containing packing material 56. Fly ash is thus directed away from the tubes into the packing material. As shown applied to superheating tubes 37 extending through the roof of a combustion chamber lined with cooling tubes 42, a box-like steel frame 44 is provided to receive roof insulating material, the bottom of which is closed by a plate 48 apertured to take the tubes 37. A layer 54 of castable refractory material is poured into the frame 44 and covered by an intermediate layer 56 of mineral wool in which collars 60 on the tubes forming baffles extend. A top layer 58 of refractory material is poured on to the mineral wool. The collars are vertically staggered in overlapping relationship. The tubes 37 can be maintained in spaced rows by spacer members (62), Fig. 4 (not shown), and the tubes of each row spaced by apertured tie bars (64) laid on top of the mineral wool.
