Abstract

1328286 Furnace roofs BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 26 Nov 1970 [26 Nov 1969] 56230/70 Heading F4A In a vapour generating and superheating unit wherein headers are arranged in an enclosed space 64 above a roof 14 of a furnace 10 and are connected to a heat exchanger by tubes 58 which extend through the roof 14, there is provided a gas tight connection between the tubes 58 and the roof 14. The tubes 58 penetrate the roof 14 at raised portions 72 of a roof casing 42. The roof comprises an array of tubes 41, web plates 73 and a layer of refractory material 75. The horizontal tubes 41A are displaced to provide apertures for the tubes 58, at which apertures the webs 73 are omitted. Refractory retaining means 74 are provided through holes in which the tubes 58 can freely move. The tubes 58 pass through, and are welded to, apertures in the raised portion 72, in a panel 72A having expansion folds 77, 78. As the unit heats up, the tubes 58 effect a lowering of the panel 72A which is accommodated by flexings of the side and corner pieces of the raised portion 72 thereby allowing no gas leakage. Lateral expansions of the panel 72A are accommodated by the expansion folds 77, 78.
