Supplying consuming devices from variablespeed generators; regulation, automatic.-A combined electromagnetic cut-out and voltage regulator for vehicle lighting sets has an armature which after the closing of the cut-out contacts, can move freely to operate the regulator as shown in the Figure an armature 5 is carried by a blade spring 6 secured to the magnetic frame 1 on which is mounted a core 2 with shunt and series windings 4, 3. When in its unattracted position the limb 7 of the armature bears against the end of blade spring 17 carrying a contact 18 which is thus held away from a cooperating fixed contact 10. On attraction of the armature due to a sufficient voltage in the dynamo 19 the initial movement of the armature allows contacts 10, 18 to come into engagement, the springiness of the blade 17 assisting this movement. The charging circuit to the battery 21 is thus completed. After this initial movement the armature can continue its movement independently of the blade 17 and the projection 8 engages a push rod 14 so transferring the voltage regulating contact 13 from the contact 11 to the contact 16. This has the effect of first switching in the resistance 22 in series with the field winding 21 and finally of short-circuiting this winding the apparatus thus functioning as a vibrating regulator. The controlled circuits may be modified so that movement of the armature cuts in and out further excitation windings or alternatively the regulator contacts may be replaced by a carbon resistance acted upon with varying pressure by the movement of the armature.
