Regulation, automatic systems and apparatus for.-A number of regulators with their contacts in series are brought into action successively and act one at a time to regulate on field circuit resistance according to the supply voltage or current. Four vibrating regulators are shown in Fig. 1 with their contacts g' - - g' controlling the resistances d<1> - - d<4>. The operating-windings h' - - h<4> are connected across the generator armature a, and each winding is in series with a resistance which is short-circuited when the regulator armature is in its unattracted position. The operating-windings h<2>, h<3>, h<4> are also in series with resistances j<1>, j<2>, j<3> respectively, which are short-circuited by auxiliary switches k<1>, k<2>, k<3> when the preceding regulator is attracted. At first, the regulation is effected by the regulator e<1>, but as soon as the resistance d<1> becomes insufficient with the contacts g' held open, the regulator e<2> is affected. The resistance j' is short-circuited and the coil h<2> starts the arm e<2> vibrating. While the contacts g<2> are open, the coils l<2> are supplied with current and lock the regulator e<1> with its contacts open. If the introduction of the resistance d<2> is insufficient, the regulator e<2> stays in its attracted position and the resistance j<2> is short-circuited, thereby enabling the regulator e<3> to operate. The last regulator may be arranged so that, in its attracted position, it connects a resistance across the dynamo terminals.
