Abstract

Road-traffic signals on vehicles.-A direction indicator for motor vehicles comprises two semaphore hands 5 operated by a common lever 9, 14 which is locked one way or the other to operate the selected semaphore according as to which of two electromagnets 12 is energized. Additionally, stencil signs operated by a push button or by the brake lever are used. The hands 5, mounted in bearing bushes 3, have rigid with them flats 8 which coact with shoulders 11 on the lever 9, 14, which is pivoted at 10. At the end of an oscillation the arm 9 meets a contact 15 to illuminate a pilot lamp on the dashboard. Lamps 17 illuminate stencil signs "stop" and "pass," the circuits of the lamps being operated respectively from the brake lever and a push button; or these circuits may be closed automatically, if "left" and "right" stencils are used, when the semaphore is operated. A housing 21 on the indicator casing has a ruby rear light 23 and windows 24 through which a lamp 20 shines to illuminate the raised semaphore and the back number plate.
