282,997. Douglas Motors, Ltd., and Pullin, C. G. Jan. 21, 1927. Steering-mechanism.-A steering-damper for motor-cycles &c., of the type having a contractible friction band, comprises a shell formed of an annular disc 2, Fig. 1, and flanges 3, 4, the flange 4 fitting upon and turning with the steering-stem 5, while the flange 3 surrounds the housing 8 of the upper ball race of the head 7, and encloses a friction band 16 adapted to engage the periphery of the housing 8. The flange 4 is formed with dogs on its upper edge to engage corresponding recesses in the lower face of the steering-clip 10 carrying the handle-bars at 11. As shown in inverted plan in Fig. 3, the flange 3 is provided with a radial lug 13, which is bored to receive an adjusting-screw 14 and also serves as an anchorage for one end 15 of the friction band 16. The free end 17 of the band 16 carries a nut 18 engaged by the screw 14 to adjust the frictional grip of the band on the housing 8. The screw 14 is locked by a resilient blade 20 secured to the lug 13 and so shaped as to engage a serrated part 19 of the screw.
