Abstract

Switches, actuating; clockwork actuation; retarding devices.-Energization of an electromagnet i causes a detent k to release a ratchet wheel h which then, under the influence of a spring a or other power drives a train of clockwork mounted on a lever o pivoted at d, the resistance of the clockwork train, which may terminate in a damping vane u, to the motion causing the lever o to move upwards into engagement with a stop n thereby bringing a wheel q of the train into engagement with a wheel v which thereupon rotates and raises a weight x which after a time interval actuates a contact device y. When the electromagnet i is deenergized, which may occur automatically when contact is made at y, the detent k engages and stops the wheel h but the clockwork train continues to revolve owing to its kinetic energy and so causes the lever o to move back into its original position against the stop m. The wheel v is thus set free and the weight x descends without retardation ready for the next operation of the relay. In a modification the retarding device is connected to the driven member v instead of to the intermediate driving member q.
