Abstract
354,899. Retarding action of electromagnetic switches, drum controllers, &c. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, London, and WILSON, W., of General Electric Co., Witton, Birming- ham. May 31, 1930, No. 16914. [Classes 38 (iii) and 38 (v).] A retarding device for a contactor or power-operated switch or for a drum controller &c. comprises an escapement wheel 1 driven by the switch-closing mechanism, the speed of rotation of the wheel 1 being governed by a balanced oscillatory mass of variable moment of inertia having pallets 3, 4 engaging the wheel 1. The oscillatory mass may include two spindles 8, 9, carrying weights 10, 11 movable thereon to varying distances from the centre of oscillation 6, or the oscillatory mass may consist of a flywheel, the moment of inertia of which is regulated by screws round its periphery. The wheel 1 is driven by gearing from a wheel 15 having six pins 18 which are engaged in turn by a pawl 17 on a bell-crank lever 22, 21 connected to the armature of the contactor. When the contactor electromagnet is de-energized the lever 22, 21 rotates in a clockwise direction and the pawl 17 slides upwards to engage the next pin 18. When the electromagnet is energized the pawl 17 drives the wheel 15 at a rate determined by the escapement mechanism.
