Oils, extracting by solvents.-In a process for washing or extracting material in a soft or granular condition, such as seed or oil cakes, the material is disposed in a thin ribbon sandwiched between mating conveyers and conveyed in the direction of the length of the ribbon, and washing or extracting liquid is passed through the material in the direction of the thickness of the ribbon. The liquid is preferably passed through the material successively in opposite directions, and the general flow of the liquid is opposite to that of the material. Suitable apparatus for carrying out the process comprises two endless belts 1, 2 having a cross-section as shown in Fig. 2, and acting as filters. The material is fed from a hopper 20 on to belt 1 and is enclosed between the belts at roller 4 in a space as indicated in Fig. 3. The belts convey the ribbon of material to the surface of a perforated drum 7 as shown in Fig. 4, and washing &c. liquid is passed into the drum at 8 and passes through the perforations 22, Fig. 4 and through the material enclosed between the belts and exits at 10. The material is then washed successively in opposite directions by means of reversing rollers 12, 12<1>, 12<11> and washing drums 11, 13 and 14, and is finally removed from the belts by brushes 6 and falls .into a hopper 24. The passage of the liquid through the material may be effected by pressure or suction instead of gravity, and fresh liquid entering the drum 14 may pass out at 10<11> to drum 13 and so on, to produce a continually enriched washing or extracting liquid. The washed material may be dried before or after leaving the belts, and the apparatus may be enclosed to prevent losses due to evaporation &c.
