Abstract

280,389. White, A. E., (Wright, A., and Young, F. W.). Dec. 14, 1926. Rotary filters. - A cake of solid matter separated from suspension in liquid is formed around reinforcing means, such as mesh or parallel strands of wire or rope, by which it is conveyed away to drying apparatus or for disposal. In the apparatus shown the cake is formed by means of a rotary filter 1, Fig. 2, dipping into a trough 19 to which the material under treatment is supplied. The cake separated by the filter is built up around the parallel strands of a reinforcing device 11 which encircle the filter and carry the cake around a heated drying drum 12. The strands also pass around a roller 14, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the cake is detached and delivered to a hopper 15. A comblike device for detaching the cake may be substituted for the roller 14. The filter 1 is driven uniformly, and the speed of the drum 12 is controlled by a rheostat connected to pivoted arms 17 carrying an idler roll 16 which rests in the slack of the strands 11. The cake on the filter is subjected to pressure by a band 4 passing round rolls 5 - - 8. In the apparatus shown in Fig. 8 the reinforcing medium passes from a filter drum a around steam-heated rolls f - - i supported on a frame which also supports a compressor belt k. The roll i is formed with circumferential grooves i<1>, Fig. 9. into which the strands enter so that the cake is detached.
