Abstract
282,273. Winkler, C. May 9, 1927. Stereotype, casting.-In a stereotype casting- machine of the type wherein the casting-box is adapted to be pressed against the outlet of the melting-pot, the outlet being controlled by a closing-member, the movements of the casting- box and closing-member for the pot are controlled by means of a continuously-driven timing-shaft actuated quickly during the time when the box and closing-member are to be moved and slowly during the remaining period of the casting-operation. A continuouslyrotating worm-wheel 5, carrying a spur-wheel 6 and a one-toothed whecs 7, is rotatably mounted on a shaft 8. The wheel 6 engages a toothed segment 9 secured to a timing-shaft 10. When the shaft 10 is rotated by the wheel 6 and segment 9, a segment 11 rotates a toothed wheel 15 on the shaft 17 controlling the movements of the casting-box, the engaging parts of the segment 11 and wheel 15 being sufficient to turn the shaft one halfrevolution. Secured to the shaft 17 is a Geneva stop-member 23, which, as the box is moved into closed position, engages the circular portion of a disc 24, provided with notches 25, 26, secured on the shaft 10. Just prior to this point, the rotation of the shaft 10 has brought teeth on a segment 14 into engagement with a spur-wheel 18 secured to the shaft 8, so that the shaft is thus rotated to open the closure-member for the pot. A Geneva stop 19 and notched disc 20 co-operate to hold the shaft 8 in position to keep the closure-member open. The teeth on the segment 9 then move out of engagement with the wheel 6, and the teeth on a segment 13 on the shaft 10 into position to be engaged by the tooth on the wheel 7, so that, for each rotation of the worm-wheel 5, the segment 13 is advanced one tooth. The segment is held in position between each movement by the wheel 7 by a pivoted pawl 27 engaging in the teeth of the segment. The outer end of the pawl engages with the circumference of the wheel 7 but falls into a recess 28 correctly positioned to permit disengagement of its inner end from the teeth of the segment. The movement of the segment 13 continues until the teeth on the segment 9 are again brought into engagement with the wheel 6 and the shaft 10 is again rotated rapidly. A second series of teeth on the segment 14 engage the wheel 18 to close the closure-member for the pot, the engagement of the stop 19 in one of the notches 21, 22 in the disc 20 permitting the movement of the shaft. The stop 23 then engages one of the notches 25, 26 to free the shaft 17 which is then rotated through the cooperation of a gear-wheel 16 thereon and a toothed segment 12 on the shaft 10. This results in the opening of the casting-box, and at this point, when the wheel 6 engages at the middle of the toothed portion of the segment 9. a clutch is disconnected to prevent further operation. The segment 11 and gear-wheel 15 are arranged so that the closing of the box is effected more quickly than the opening under the influence of the segment 12 and gear-wheel 16, so that the matrix is not injured during stripping.
