Abstract
393,026. Casting stereotype &c. plates. SCHNELLPRESSENFABRIK KOENIG & BAUER AKT.-GES., 4, Friedrich Koenig-Strasse, Wurzburg, Bavaria, Germany. Feb. 3, 1932, No. 3224. Convention date, March 4, 1931. [Class 100 (ii).] A machine for casting semi-cylindrical stereotype or other plates comprises a vertical stationary mould and a core movable by crank mechanism in a straight line to and from the mould and connected to gearing which, after the core leaves the mould, swings it through 180‹ to deliver the cast plate and then returns it to its initial position prior to its entry into the mould for the next cast. Fig. 3 shows the core 1 in its withdrawn position with the cast plate 5 delivered on to a table 12. The shaft 13 of the core is connected by rods to crank pins 10, 11 carried by gear wheels engaging pinions 21 on an intermittently rotated shaft 20. During the movements of the core to and from the mould 2, pins 15, 16, 17 carried by a plate 14 fixed to the shaft 13 engage stationary cams 18, 19 to swing the core through 180‹. The pin 17 is longer than the pins 15, 16 and cooperates with both cams while the pins 15, 16 engage only with the cam 19, the cam 18 being of a less height than the cam 19 to allow the passage thereover of the pins 15, 16. The shaft 20 carries a constantly rotating loose gear 23 adapted to be operatively connected to the shaft by a pawl or key 24 pivotally mounted in a collar fast on the shaft and having a shank of semi-cylindrical cross section adapted to be turned by a spring 25 into engagement with a notched collar 35 fixed to the gear 23. The pawl is provided with two projections 27, 28 adapted to engage a stop 29 to turn the pawl out of engagement with the collar 35 to disconnect the shaft 20. The projection 28 operates when the crank pins 10, 11 are in the dead-centre position with the core in casting position, and the projection 27 acts when the core has been fully withdrawn to carry the edges of the plate past spring-mounted fingers 6, 7 and has been returned sufficiently for the fingers to have pushed the plate on to the table 12. The stop 29 is withdrawn manually to allow clutching of the shaft 20 to the gear 23 and is moved into stopping position by a spring under the control of a cam opening 32 in a gear wheel 31 driven from the shaft 20. A timing device may be provided to prevent withdrawal of the core before the plate has set. This device comprises an arm 43, Fig. 5, on the stop 29, carrying a roller 42 co-operating with a disc 36 having a notch 44 in its periphery. The disc 36 is adapted to be coupled for one revolution to a constantly rotating gear wheel 37 by means of a pin 41 axially movable in the disc and adapted to be pressed by a spring into one of a series of holes in the wheel 37. A pivoted hook 40 is normally held by a stop 38 so as to engage beneath a collar on the pin 41 to hold it in the disengaged position and the stop 38 is adapted to be reciprocated by a grooved cam 39 moving with the gear 31. At the commencement of the closing movement of the core, the cam 39 actuates the stop 38 to release the hook 40 which is then withdrawn by a spring 45 to allow the pin 41 to couple the disc 36 to the wheel 37. On further movement of the cam 39 the stop 38 returns into the part of the hook to disconnect the disc 36 after a complete revolution when the notch 44 is then opposed to the roller 42 to allow of withdrawal of the stop 29. The speed of the gear 39 is such that during one revolution of the disc 36 there is time for the core to reach casting position and for the plate to be cast and solidified.
