Abstract

207,618. Winkler, C. Sept. 1, 1922. Stereotype, casting..In a stereotype-plate casting-machine of the kind in which the mould is adapted to be pressed against a slot in the bottom of the melting pot to receive the charge of metal, the core of the mould is fixed to a tilting frame operated by a crank mechanism, and the bed of the mould is slidable in the frame and reciprocated by a second crank mechanism so that the mould is closed when the frame is raised to casting position, and opened when the frame is lowered. The core 4, Fig. 1, is fixed to a frame 6 pivoted on a pin 8 and the bed 5 is slidable in slots 7 in the frame. A shaft 9 journaled in the frame 6 is connected by crank pins 10 and connecting-rods 11 to the bed-plate 12 so that, as the shaft 9 is rotated, the frame 6 is tilted up and down to bring the mould alternatively into and out of engagement with a slot 3 in the bottom of the melting pot 1. A resilient pressure of the mould against the pot is obtained by forming the connecting-rods 11 of two steel members fastened together and having an opensided elliptical' space between them so that the rods are resilient in a longitudinal direction. The bed 5 is operated by rods 13 connected to cranks on the shaft 9 and actuated bv a slotted crank arm 51, Fig. 4, on a shaft 31. The means for driving the shaft 31 is shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and comprises a motor 15 driving a worm 21 engaging a worm-wheel 22 loose upon a shaft 25 to which is fixed a disc 23 having a toothed part adapted to engage a spur gear 29 fast on the shaft 31. The clutch 27, by which the wheel 22 is connected to and disconnected from the shaft 25, is operated by a lever 41 actuated by cams 40, 40 on the sleeve 40 of a gear wheel 32 which is loose upon the shaft 31 and driven step-by-step by a pair of diametrically opposed projections 33, 33 on a flange 34 of the wheel 22. The wheel 32 is locked between each movement by a pawl 36 engaging a wheel 35 secured to the wheel 32, diametrically opposed recesses 39 on a second flange 38 on the wheel 22 allowing the pawl to move clear of the wheel 35 at the required times. A crank 26 on the shaft 25 operates the cock 2 controlling the metal outlet 3 by means of a link 54 and arm 55. In operation, the wheel 22 rotates freely until, by the rotation of the wheel 32, the cam 40 operates the lever 41 to close the clutch 27 thereby causing rotation of the shaft 25 to actuate the cock 2 and to drive the shaft 31 to close the mould and move it into engagement with the metal outlet 3. The shaft 31 then stops by reason of the toothed part of the disc 23 moving out of engagement with the gear 29, and the cock 2 is further turned to allow the metal to flow to the outlet 3. The cam 40 then actuates the lever 41 to open the, clutch 27 and the shafts 25, 31 remain stationary until the wheel 32 has made a complete revolution and the cam 40 has again actuated the lever 41 to close the clutch. Re-engagement of the toothed part of the disc 23 with the wheel 29, to drive the shaft 31 to lower the frame 6 and open the :mould, does not take place until the cock is turned sufficiently to close the metal outlet 3. A Geneva stop gear locks the shaft 31 against rotation during the period when the gear 29 and toothed part of the disc 23 are out of mesh.
