MOTOR OPERATED CASTING DEVICE Original Filed Aug. 28, 1925 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented Feb. 25, 1930 This invention relates to a casting box especially for stereotype printing plates, although capable of use with other casting boxes.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide for the operation of the box and pump by power-operated means, the automatic shutting off of said means when the desired object has been accomplished so as not to require attention by the operator for the: latter purpose and the automatic stopping of the motor in a position in which the box is in condition for reloading.

' Heretofore it has been customary to operate the heavy back of a stereotype plate castwith metal in a similar way, particularly in the small machines. This invention is designed for use on a machine of this type and for eliminating the hand operation.
Referring to the drawings, I have shown a motor 1 coupled to a worm 2 driving a j worm wheel 3 consisting of about a semicircle. This segment is secured on a cross shaft 4 located on the frame of the machine.

by a swinging handle 7 of a switch 8 which is connected to cause the motor to turn to swing the shaft. On the shaft 4 are arms carrying two pins 9 and 10 so located with respect to the segment 3 that upon the completion of a half turn of the shaft 4 one of these pins 9 engages the handle 7 of the switch 8 and opens it. This shuts off the current of the motor, thereby stopping the movement of the back and leaving it in closed position in the present case.
lVhen it is desired to open the mold the handle 7 is moved in the opposite direction to reverse the motor. This causes the shaft to turn in the opposite direction, bringing the back into the position shown in Fig. 2. lVhen it gets into that position the pin 10 has turned into a position as shown in Fig.
2 to engage the handle 7 and bring it into neutral position. This shuts off the power and stops the further motion of the back.
The pump P for supplying metal to the mold may be of the usual or any desired type, except that it has the usual piston 17 and piston rod 16 adapted to be operated vertically to force enough metal upwardly through the spout 11 to cast a plate at one operation of the piston.
Instead of operating the pump manually I use a motor 12 connected to a worm 13 which operates a segmental worm wheel 14. A
lever 15 turns with the wheel and thus raises the piston rod 16 and the piston 17 or lowers them. It will be understood that turning the segment 14 in one direction raises the piston and turning it back lowers it, and that in the latter case enough metal is forced out of the pump chamber 18 into the mold to cast a complete plate as iswell understood in this art.
The motor 12 is provided with a switch 8 similar to the one described. This switch 8 is operated by handle 19 corresponding to the handle 7 and by link 20 and handle grip 21. The lever 15 is equipped with two pins 19 and 1O which cause the switch handle to turn whenthe piston has reached its extreme position at either end of the stroke.
The operation of this part'of the device is very simple. After the mold is closed as the pin 9. In this case also the motor 12 instead of being stopped, is rever-sedas thepin 9 moves the handle 19 beyond neutral into its'extreme' position. The piston-is returned to its original position, forcing a charge of metal into the mold. At the end ofthe reverse stroke, the pin 10 moves the switch handle back into neutral position and stops themotor and pump in the position shown in Fig. 4.
lVhen theplate has set, the operator moves the handle 7 to the right, causing the casting box to open so that the plate can be removed and the matrix changed if desired. No manipulation of the handle 21 is necessary. In this way the two operations required for castinga plate are controlled by'the two handles 7 and .21 and the stopping of the parts is automatic so that no attention is required except to start them. This simplifies the operation considerably and reduces the amount of attention and supervision required in the casting of plates in small plants.
Although Ihave illustrated and described only a single form of the invention I am aware of the fact that modifications can be made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims.
Therefore I do not wish to be limited in theserespects, but what I do claim is I 1. The combination with'a stereotype casting box, of power-operated means for opening'and closing it, and means whereby when the box is openthe power-operated means will be automatically. shut off. I
2. The combination with a casting box, of means for closing the box comprising a toggle and a shaft for operating the toggle, a gear on the shaft, a motor connected for turning said gear through part of a revolution, a switch for controlling the operation of the motor, "and means for opening the switch when thegear is turned part way around.
3. The combination with a stereotype casting box having a reciprocable back, of means for reciprocating the back, comprising a toggle and a shaft for operating the toggle, a segmental gear on the shaft, a motor con- 1 nected for turning said gear throughoutpart of a revolution,a switch vfor controlling the operation of the motor, and means onthe shaftfor opening the switch when the segmental gear is turned far enough to close the mold or bring it into fully open position.
4. The combination with a casting mold having a reoiprocableback, of, a shaft having a toggle for moving the back toward and from the core of the mold, a segmental gear fixed on the shaft, a motor having a worm meshing with the gear foroscillating I it, a switch for controlling the connection of the motor with a source ofpower, and a pair of pins mounted to turn with the shaft, each one being in position with respect to the segmental gear to open the switch when the gear reaches either of its extremepo'sitions and the mold-is either closed or fully open.
5. The combination with a stereotype plate casting machine, of a motor for operating-it having a worm. connected with its shaft, a gear adapted to be turned by the worm, means connected with the gear for means for closing the box comprising atog- I 'gle and a shaft foroperating the toggle,
a gear on the shaft, a motor'connected for turning said gear throughpartof a revo, lution, a switchfor controlling the operation of the motor, and-means on the shaft for opening the switch when the gear is turned part way around.
8. The combination with a stereotype plate casting machine comprising a back. of a motor for operatingit,andhandcontrolled means for causing the .motorto'stop automatically in such position as to have the back openfor reloading.
9. The combination with astereotype plate casting mold and a motor for opening'and closing 1t, ofmanual' means for controllmg the stopp ng of the motor and automatic means forthen stopping the motor with the mold open.
