1929. Serial N0.'359,565 y This .is a division of my' application for patent, Serial No. 53,182, led August 28,. 1925 on a motor operated casting device.
This invention relates to a pump especially for filling stereotype printingplate molds, although capable of use for other purposes.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide for the operation ot the pump by power-operated means, and the automatic shuttingoilf o1" said means whenk the desired object has been accomplished so as-not to require' attention by the operator tor the latther objects and advantages of the in- Reterence is to be had to the vaccompanying drawings, in which y A, f l Fig. 1 is a plan of a stereotype plate casting pump constructed in Vaccordance with this invention, shown With-the mold closed and ready 'for Afilling, and 1 Fig. 2 is a side view of the .pump mechanism partly in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Y
Heretofore it hasbeen Vcustomary to op-V molds with metal by a. continuousiy operating `motor from-which the pump is disconnectedV to stop the pump. This invention is designed Jfor usev ona machine of this type in which the motor itself is stopped whenever the pump is to be stopped.
f The pump P for supplying metal to the mold may be of the usual or any'desired type, except that it has the usual piston 17 and piston rod 16 adapted to beoperated vertically to force enough metal upwardly through the spout 11 to cast a plate Vat one Y operation of the piston.
I use a motor 12 connected to a worm 13 which operates a segmental worm wheel 14. A Vlever 15 turns with the wheel and thus or lowers them. It will be understood that turning the segment 14 in one direction raises the piston and turning it back lowers it, and that in the latter'case enough metal is forced out of the pump chamber 18 into' the mold to cast a complete plate as is well 450 understood in this art.

operated byanarm 19`fand by a'link y2()V and handle gripl 21.' The leverl 15 isv equipped with two pins 9 `and 10 which cause 'the y switch handle tojturn vwhen thekp'iston has reached its extreme'position at ieitherend of the stroke.
- Thefoperation of this part of device is vvery-simple. -After themold'rC B is closed as shown in' Fig.*1 theoperator vpulls the handle grip 21 forwardf- This -`causes the' switch 8 to close and the motor 12to rraise the vpump piston. At theV end of the pump stroke the parts 19,20vv and *21j are Vmoved past their originalposition Vby the 'pin 9 acting'Y on they switch`fhandlef19." In
thiscase the motor12`in'stead of",` being stopped, is reversed as the pin`9.movesl the handle 19 beyond Vneutral into its extreme position.l The piston-isreturned'to its original' position, after having 'forced .a charge of lmetal into the-mold. At theh'e'nd oi the reverse stroke," the pin 10 moves'the switch `handle back intol neutrall position and stops the motor Vand pump in thev position shown When the plate vhas set, the operator causes the ycasting boxto opensc that the plate can be. removed and 'the kmatrix changed if desired. No manipulation of the' 'handle 21 is necessary. Inthis way the operation required for charging themold ooV is vcontrolled by the handle 21 andthe stopping of the parts is automatic so that no Aattention is required except `to start them.
`This f Ysimplifies the operation considerably A'and reduces the amount ot attention and' supervision required inthe casting of plates in smallplants." 1"
Aithoughr have illustrated-ana described.
only a; singlefform of the invention Iyam` awareof the fact that moditications'c'an be` art 3Without departing from the scopeor" the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not 'wish 'to be limited in these 1. TheV combination with a Yfstereotype casting box and power-o eratedmeans' for opening and' closing it, o -a pump for-intro- `made therein by any person skilledy inthe 'isoy ducing metal into the mold, power-operated means for operating the pump, anV electric switch for starting the, said last named power-operating means, and means whereby whenl the pump has performed a complete cycle of operations to rfill the mold with a Y charge of metal the power-operatedmeans will be shut off automatically.
` 2. rIhe combinationV with stereotype plate castingmold, of a pump having a spout adapted to conduct metal into said mold,
saicl pump having a piston movableto 'con-fV4 duct .a ull chargeoi metal into the mold,k an electric'motor having means for operat-` gear having an arm connected with the piston for operating it, hand-operated means for connecting the motor with a source of power to rotate it, 'and means for reversing the motor Vwhen the gear has been turned through a'complete stroke lthereby causing the gearv to turn `back and the piston to move back to normal position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto aliixed my signature.
