LOSING MOLD BOXES AND METAL AUTOMATIC DRIVE FOR OPENING AND C CONTROLLING ORGANS IN MACHINES FOR CASTING STEREOPLATES Filed May 10. 1928 INVENI'OR 6&7] WilnAZer AT Tok'w a rs Patented Dec. 10, 1929 UNITED STATES PATENT, OFFICE CARL WINKLER, OF BERN, SWITZERLAND AUTOMATIC DRIVE FOR OPENING AND CLOSING MOLD v LING ORGANS IN MACHINES FOR CASTING S TEREOPLATES BOXES AND METAL-CONTROL- Application filed May 10, 1928, Serial No. 276,764, and in Germany May 21, 1927.
Automatic drives for machines for casting stereo-plates already exist in which the shaft for closing the mold-box is driven from a continuously rotating part by means of spur-wheels.
According to my invention the shaft by which the mold box is opened and the shaft by which the organ for controlling the flow of molten metal into the mold box is opened and closed are operated by the continuously rotating part also through spur-wheel segments, but by means of mechanical elements which, in the working periods of said shaft are moved quickly by spur-wheels and spurwheel segments, and, in the time for cooling the cast plates, are moved slowly by means of a one-tooth wheel and spur-wheel segments. The advantage of this device consists in the fact that one of two mechanical elements driven at different speeds can be constructed as a hollow shaft on the shaft for operating the mold box, and the other mechanical element can be arranged as a hollow shaft on the shaft for operating the metal controlling organ. As the continuously rotating part can also revolve loosely on one of the shafts, it is possible to arrange the whole drive on two shafts in a very compact manner.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 shows a horizontal section through the entire drive, Fig. 2 a section on AB, Fig. 3 is a section on CD and Fig. 4 a section on EF in Fig. 1.
The shaft a serves for operating the organ (valve) for controlling the flow of molten metal, and the shaft 6 for operatingthe mold box. On the shaft (1 is keyed the spur-wheel c and on the shaft 6 is keyed the spur-wheel segment d. The shaft a is surrounded by the hollow shafts e, f, of which e is one of the parts termed mechanical elements in the above general description. The shaft 6 is surrounded by the hollowshaft g, the other mechanical element mentioned above. On the hollow shaft f is keyed the worm-wheel k that is driven continuously by a worm (Fig. 3) when the drive is put into operation to cast a plate. The rotation of the worm-wheel h is transferred by the hollow shaft 7 and spur- Wheel segment 2' to the spur-wheel segment cl, so that the shaft 6 is turned quickly until ment a through the angle of 3 wheel segment 9,
the spur-wheel segments z', all come out of engagement with other. The mold box is then closed. During the rotation of the shaft 6 the sh'afta is also turned at a slower speed by the spur-wheel 7c, spur-wheel segment Z, hollow shaft 9, spurwheel segment m and spur-wheel c. The shaft acontinuesthis rotation until all the teeth of the spur-wheel segment Z have passed out of engagement with the spur wheel k, in which position the metal controlling organ actuated by the thaft a is open. 'By this rotation of the hollow shaft 9 the teeth of anotherspur-wheel segment a secured on this shaft is brought into engagement with the one-tooth wheel to fastened on the hollow-shaft f, which during spur-wheel segteeth. In this period of slow rotation of the hollow shaft each revolution turns the 9 this shaft. is held between each turning movement by a pawl z engaging in the disc n. During this period the shafts a, b are stationary,' because the teeth of the spurwheel segments 71 and m are not in engagement with the teeth of the segment 03 and spur-wheel 0. This period of slow motion corresponds with thetime required to cool the plate, and the metal controlling organ remains open, and the mold box closed, until by the teeth of the spur-wheel segment Z come into engagement with the spur-wheel I: and the teeth of the spur-wheel segment m come into engagement with the spur-wheel c, whereupon the metal controlling organ is closed.
The rotation of the hollow shaft 9, nomatter whether this shaft is turning quicker or slower is'transferred by the spur-wheels 0, p to the hollow shaft 0, so that during the slow motion of the hollow shaft 9 simultaneously the spurkeyed on the hollow shaft 6, is brought into engagement with the spurwheel segment 1, made in one piece with the spur-wheel segment cl, whereupon the mold boX is opened by the rotation of the hollowshaft e when the hollow-shaft g is being turned by the spur-wheel 7a and spur-wheel segment Z. This opening of the mold-box takes place comparatively slowly because the diameter of the spur-wheel k is smaller than rotation of the hollow shaft 9 the pzo hollow .shaft surronnding vthe shaft serving that of the spur-wheel segment Z, and the for latching the first mentioned hollow shaft spur-wheels 0, p have the same diameter. against rotation at predetermined times.
The shaft 6, in the position in which the In testimony whereof I have signed my mold box is closed, is locked by the discs 8, t name to this specification. V operating in the manner of a Geneva cross. CARL WINKLER.
Similar discs u, o and y, w are provided .to lock the shaftniinthe positions corresponding to the open and closed positions of the metal controlling organ.
What I claim and desire to-secureby Letr ters Patent of the United States is:
