Retorts.-A semi-portable carbonizing plant for making briquettes or balls from sawdust, and for semi-coking these, and wood or wood waste, comprises a. briquetting plant and a tunnel oven for heating the briquettes, and a number of retorts for heating either the briquettes or the wood or wood waste, and also fuel drying and tar recovery apparatus. A furnace 1 heats a tunnel oven 3, through which moulds 5 are passed on an endless chain, and a chamber 6 enclosing retorts 7 each containing a basket for holding the charge, a third chamber 14 for reheating the briquettes after being semi-coked is also heated by the furnace. The sawdust is dried in driers 15 and conveyed by screws 16 into stirrers 17 having rotating vanes 19 before passing by conduits 20 to a charging hopper 21 for filling the moulds 5 which are then closed on a bench 35 and passed to a press 34. The moulds then pass through the tunnel oven and are cooled before reaching a stripping press 33 in which they are emptied for re-use. The briquettes are reheated in the chamber 14 at a slightly lower temperature than chambers 3 or 6.
