Paints; varnishes.-A varnish comprises a mixture of a solution of celluloid or nitro-cellulose and a solution of a base prepared by treating a resin or a resin and oil with nitric acid. Bitumen, pitch or other colouring matter, shellac, copal &c. may be added. Resins such as resin or copal may be treated with nitric acid, preferably diluted with water, the temperature of the materials being kept below 212 F. Excess of acid is neutralized by ammonia, soda or other alkali or by melting the product and exposing it to air. The product is dissolved in methylated, alcohol or other solvent. Oil such as linseed oil may be added to the resin and the mixture treated with nitric acid to produce the base.
