Abstract

Medicines for internal use. - In preparing, flavouring, nourishing, and similar substances from proteins, carbohydrates or other animal or vegetable matters by treatment with alkali or acid, excess alkali or acid is neutralized by the use of glutamic acid or a salt of this acid. The product may be mixed with medicines. Thus, fish or animal meat may be treated with dilute alkali excess of which is neutralized by glutamic acid or glutamic acid hydrochloride: or starch may be heated with hydrochloric acid under a pressure of two atmospheres until it no longer gives the iodine reaction, the neutralization being then effected by the use of di-sodium glutamate. The final solution may be concentrated, or reduced to powder or solid form. Wheat, maize, casein, egg yolk, &c. may be the source of the protein. The glutamic acid or its salt is preferably prepared by heating animal or vegetable protein matter in an autoclave with a catalyst, such as powdered iron or iron oxide, and a mineral acid. the pressure applied not exceeding four atmospheres.
