Abstract
1414107 Pet foods; artificial meat QUAKER OATS CO 21 Jan 1974 [20 Aug 1973] 02823/ 74 Heading A2B Pet food is made by admixing a proteinaceous mixture having a protein content of at least 30% with water to give a mixture containing 15 to 40% moisture, subjecting the moistened mixture to conditions of sheer elevated temperature or elevated pressure to produce a flowable substance, and extruding the flowable substance so that it does not puff and is in a translucent to glassy state. The translucent to glassy extrudate is either (a) placed in a confined space, subjected to water boiling temperature at superatmospheric pressure, puffed by releasing the pressure, mixed with a meat containing mixture so that it forms 1 to 15% of the resulting mixture, sealed in a can and retorted to sterilise it, or (b) mixed with a meat containing mixture in the unpuffed state to form 1 to 15% of the resulting mixture, sealed in a can, and retorted to sterilise and cause puffing. The protein may be soy flour, soy protein, soy protein concentrate, soy protein isolate, casein, caseinate salts, gelatin, microbiological protein, egg white, muscle protein, keratin (e.g. hoofs, hair, feathers), lactalbumen, or blood. 0.5 to 3% of oil may be included in the proteinaceous mixture e.g. soybean, wheat, corn, coconut, lard, or mineral oil or stearates or polylactic acid esters e.g. sodium stearoyl-2- lactylate. The translucent to glassy extrudate may be partially dried before puffing. The pressurisation before puffing may be for 15 to 75 seconds at 150 to 250 p.s.i. The pH of the protein may be adjusted to 4.5 to 10.5, prior to addition of water. A calcium salt e.g. dicalcium phosphate dihydrate or calcium chloride, may be included. Wheat flour, corn starch, yellow corn flour, cane sugar, dextrose, seasoning and flavouring may also be added. The meat mixture may contain cereal e.g. oats, barley, silo.
