Abstract

A ready-to-eat cereal product is obtained by mixing a ground cereal, to which may be added vitamin- and mineral-containing substances and flavouring materials, with water or other liquid and feeding the liquor so formed on to a drier, e.g. of the twin cylinder type, where it is subjected in the form of a thin film to a single heat treatment to gelatinize the starch and cook and dry the product in one operation. A mixture of wheat or other meal, wheat germ, bone meal, dry yeast and salt may be employed. The cylinders of the drier may be rotated at two revolutions per minute and heated by steam at 50 lbs. pressure per sq. inch.ALSO:A ready-to-eat cereal food product is obtained by mixing the ground cereal with water or other suitable liquid and feeding the liquor so formed on to a drier, e.g. of the twin cylinder type, where it is subjected while in the form of a thin film to a single heat treatment to gelatinize the starch and cook and dry the product in one operation. Vitamin- and mineral-containing substances and flavouring materials may be added, e.g. a mixture of wheat or other meal, wheat germ, bone meal, dry yeast and salt may be used. The cylinders of the drier may be rotated at two revolutions per minute and heated by steam at 50 lbs. pressure per sq. inch. The product is preferably of powdered or flaky form and can be mixed with cold milk, water, &c. to give a cream-like mass.
