Abstract

279,971. Hotchkiss, D. V. Aug. 26, 1926. Propelling by water jets.-Propulsion of vessels is effected by jets issuing tangentially from an impeller casing in which the fluid is caused to, have an expanding helical flow relative to an axis at an angle to the longitudinal axes of the vessel. A rotary impeller 9 constituted by a plate is contained in a conical casing 7 having a triangular opening 8 along its side, the surrounding fluid being drawn in near the apex, impelled axially in an expanding helix, and thence discharged tangentially near the base as a propulsive jet. The apparatus may be constructed in duplicate and a number of such positioned in the hull. Reversal of the direction of rotation of the impeller reverses the direction of the jet. Alternatively an external deflecting blade may be provided for reversing or steering. The cone-shaped casing may be replaced by a paraboloid, hemisphere, or frustum of a cone.
