Railway locomotives, steam turbine, of compound or articulated construction.-Comprises a locomotive driven by a reciprocating engine combined with one or more exhaust-steam turbines which drive the wheels through toothed gearing and hydraulic, electric, electromagnetic or other disconnectible flexible coupling means. The turbine and its condenser, which may provide only a low vacuum, may be mounted on the locomotive tende'r, or on a separate truck which may be coupled to any ordinary reciprocating engine locomotive so as to use the exhaust steam thereof. The turbine may deal with all or part of the exhaust steam, the remainder being used for auxiliary engines or allowed to escape into the atmosphere. The turbine may be reversible, a reversing turbine may be provided, or a reversible hydraulic coupling may be used.
