Abstract

279,192. Edwards, C. K., Macklin, D. J., and Associated Equipment Co., Ltd. Aug. 9, 1926. Fluid - pressure. -- A lever 1 adapted to control brakes manually by means of a rod 2 and also pneumatically, hydraulically or electrically by means of a valve or switch controlled by a member 10 pivoted on the lever is connected to the rod 2 by a lost-motion device comprising a pin and slot 3 in order to allow the brakes to be applied if the lever 1 is jammed. A spring 22 draws the pin to the rear of the slot as shown. On movement of the member 10 by engagement of the operator's foot with a pedal 11 mounted thereon a valve 5 is first opened to apply the brakes by fluid pressure and a boss 18 on the member 10 engages an adjustable spring plunger 17 on the lever 1; further movement of the member 10 compresses the spring 14 to apply pressure to the lever 1 and to cause the brakes to be applied mechanically and the valve 5 is further opened. The valve may be one having a spring-balanced diaphragm and has flexible connections 20, 21 to an air reservoir and a brake cylinder. The valve may be connected to the plunger 17.
