Abstract

199,833. Cloud, J. W., and Westinghouse Brake & Saxby Signal Co., Ltd. April 1, 1922. Fluid-pressure.-In braking apparatus in which one or more brake cylinders are arranged to be brought into operation either manually or automatically in accordance with the load on the vehicle, the pipe 2 communicating between the main and additional cylinders is controlled by a valve 1 which is operated by a fluidpressure device connected with the auxiliary reservoir or other portion of the braking system. The lever 3 of the valve 1 is connected by a link 4 to an arm 5 which is rigid on a rock-shaft 6. A pin 15 on the arm 5 engages a slot 14 in a link 11 jointed to the rod 12 of a fluid-pressure piston 13. The cylinder 16 is connected at 17 to the auxiliary reservoir or to some other point in the pressure system, and the movement of the piston is opposed by a spring 18. A hand-lever 7 controlled by a spring 10 is mounted on the rock-shaft 6 and may be turned into the position 7'. In the position illustrated, the valve 1 is closed for unloaded working of the vehicle. When pressure is established in the pipe 17 the handle 7 may be turned down to open the valve 1 for loaded working of the vehicle. Under these conditions the valve will again be closed by the piston 13 if the pressure in the pipe 17 is reduced. A manually-operated valve independent of the pressure-actuated device may be provided. In a modification the opposing spring 18 is arranged outside the cylinder and is connected to the rod 12 by a pivoted lever.
