278,679. Verkaufsvereinigung fiir Teererzeugnisse Ges. Oct. 7, 1926, [Convention date]. Tar.-Tar for use in road construction is subjected to mild oxidation to render it insensitive to water. Coal tar at 150‹ C. is stirred with 5 per cent strong nitric acid until the reaction is complete. Chromic acid, permanganate, hydrogen peroxide and air are also mentioned as oxidizing agents.
