Abstract

Liquid supplied to solid under pressure of gas in generator. - An acetylene generator of the drip-feed type, in which the water is subjected to the pressure of the generated gas. has the means for actuating the drip-valve 11 located within a gas-tight cover 15 on the roof of the generator. The actuating-means may comprise a spindle 16, Fig. 2, one end of which is formed as a conical plug 17 to engage a corresponding seating 18 in the cover. On the inner end of the spindle is mounted a cam 13 engaging the projecting end of the valve stem 11, which is itself pressed upwardly by a spring 14; to the outer end of the spindle is secured a control knob 29 for setting the valve, the range of movement being determined by an adjustable collar 30 provided with a screw 31 to engage a stop projection 32 on the cover. In an alternative construction shown in Fig. 4, the valve is screw-threaded in its seating, and the projecting portion 59 of its stem 11 is flattened to enter a corresponding slot 58 in a conical plug'55 seating in the cover and provided on the exterior with a control knob and an adjustable collar 30 as in the first construction. The casing 1 of the generator is of rectangular construction subdivided by a division plate 2, Fig. 2, and the lower compartment 4 constituting the generating chamber is open at one side but is normally closed by a removable cover 38 secured bv a clamp-bar 39 and locking- screw 42. The chamber 4 receives a receptacle 44 for the carbide, the latter being supported on a wire-gauze trough 45. The receptacle is provided with a foraminous, perforated or looselyfitting cover 46, having at its centre, opposite to the drip-valve, a funnel and perforated tube 47, 48; the receptacle is held in position by springs 50. The generated gas passes through a filter 37, then through a pipe 20 which also serves to hold the cover 15 in position, to the cover which is provided with the usual connection 28, while a perforation 27 beneath the cover permits of the passage of gas to the water chamber 3. The water-filling opening 5 is closed by a cover 6 hinged at one side to the casing, and at the other secured by a swing-bolt. According to the Provisional Specification, the parts for actuating the drip-valve are entirely enclosed by a gas-tight cover; the parts are mounted on the valve-stem, and comprise a butterfly finger-grip, a stop arm engaging a pin which can be fitted in a selected one of a series of screw-threaded holes, and a milled washer slidably mounted on a squared part of the stem but urged by a spring against a correspondingly-milled frame so as to act as a locking-device.
