Abstract
277,158. General Electric Co., Ltd., Kinnes, A., and Hunt, M. S. H. Aug. 13, 1926. Electromagnetic switches; sparking, preventing.-In the manufacture of switches the contacts of which are enclosed in a highly evacuated envelope, the faces of the contacts are heated while the envelope is being evacuated, thus removing occluded gases. The heating is preferably effected by repeatedly breaking a circuit at the contacts. The Figure shows the way in which this may be done for an electromagnetic switch 1 of the kind described in Specification 271,235. The switch 1 together with auxiliary switches 2, 7 may be closed by energizing coils 8, 9, 10 respectively. A motor 13 drives a slip ring 14 and segments 15, 16 which lead the current from a negative D.C. source to coils 10, 9 respectively, the arrangement being such that the circuit to coil 9 is always broken just after the circuit to coil 10. The energization of coil 10 closes switch 7 and through it a circuit to coil 8 whereby switch 1 is closed, so that at every revolution of the motor switch 1 opens just before switch 2. A heavy current, e.g. 100 per cent overload is passed through the switch 1 first in one direction and then in the other, and should this not open, the circuit through it is at once broken by switch 2. The Provisional Specification states that the heating of the contacts may be effected by electric bombardment.
