Indicating leaks. - Escaping gas oreating a difference in pressure as compared with the outer air by diffusion through a porous member provided in the space to be rendered safe, is used to operate a liquid seal obstruction blocking the gas supply. A gas pipe 1 has a U- shaped depression 2 at the lowest point 3 of which is a pipe 4 connected to a liquid container 6 through a bend 5. The container 6 is airtight and is connected with the outer air only through a vessel 7 of porous material, or the container 6 may be closed by a porous plate. Escaping gas creates a slight super-pressure causing water in the vessel 6 to overflow and thereby syphon itself out into the bend 2 acting as a liquid seal. Known means may be used to empty the bend of water.
