276,557. Synthetic Ammonia & Nitrates, Ltd., and Humphrey, H. A. Jan. 15, 1927. Density separators. - A centrifugal separator for gases has a rotor 1 with admission ports from the hollow spindle 3; the heavier gaseous components are discharged through the hollow axle 4 and the lighter components through the flared peripheral openings 8. A baffle 6 is arranged at the centre of the rotor to ensure the outward travel of the gaseous mixture, so that it must be subject to centrifugal action before it is discharged. The part discharged through the peripheral ports travels in the casing 2 to the opening 5. The rotor walls are of graduated size and are thickest at the centre. Rotor vanes 9 are provided and the ports 8 are arranged to be as nearly tangential as possible. The apparatus is operated at a peripheral speed of not less than 600 metres per second. With high speeds and low temperature liquefaction of the gases may be effected by the pressure produced by the large centrifugal forces; to assist in achieving this object, the entering mixture may be pre-cooled and pre-compressed.
