Abstract

Axle-trucks and bogies. - In vehicles mounted on a front pair of steering wheels and a rear pivoted four-wheeled bogie one or both pairs of wheels of the bogie are steered automatically on curves by the rotation of the bogie about its pivot. The bogie frame 1 is pivoted at 11, at which point is fixed a segmental rack 15 in gear with a pinion 16 on a vertical shaft 17. When the frame 1 takes up the position shown the shaft 17 is rotated and a rack bar 19 connected by flexible members 20 to steering arms 12 is moved laterally to turn the wheels a. The rack bar may actuate alternatively pistons of a hydraulic system, in which case the front wheels 13 may be actuated simultaneously with the wheels a. In Fig. 9 the invention is shown applied to rail vehicles. The axle 25 of a pair of guiding wheels is connected to a pivot 23 by a rod 24 carrying a segmental rack 22 geared as shown to the frame of a truck 1. The subcarriage 26 is pivoted at 29 to the truck 1. In a modified arrangement embodying a fourwheeled truck the rod 24 is connected to a rack which operates a pinion geared with one halfframe of the truck, which in turn operates the other half-frame.
