Auxiliary guide-wheels for railway traffic.- Road vehicles are adapted to run on rails bv the provision of subsidiary guide-wheels carried by arms or brackets attached to the axle in such a manner that they can be placed in and removed from the position in which they act as flanges for the ordinary vehicle wheels and when removed will not interfere with the swivelling or steering movements of the wheels. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the two steering-wheels 2 run on rails 31 and are guided by rollers 5 carried on inclined axes 6 secured in the ends of arms 7, 20 mounted on the under side of the axle 1. The arm 7 is connected to the bracket 10 on the axle by a pivot pin 18 arranged at such an angle that the wheel 5, when moved out of action, swings into the position shown in dotted lines in which it is entirely clear of the road wheel 2. The arm 20 when in position, is rigidly clamped in taper brackets 21, 23 on the axle but is entirely removed when necessary. In the construction shown applied to the rear or driving axle in Fig. 2, horizontal pivots 27 are arranged at a slight angle to the centre line of the axle, as shown at Fig. 6, so that the guide-wheels 5, when swung clear of the rails are only moved slightly inwards, this being all that is necessary since the road wheels 2a do not swivel for steering. The brackets 7 may be held firmly in their operative or inoperative position by the pins 27 which are specially shaped for this purpose.
