Heat of compression, absorbing.-Cooling is effected by the passage of fluid into and out of the cylinder during the suction stroke. The head of a cylinder liner 19 which acts as a sleeve valve is exposed to an air current from a blower in communication with the inlet 44, the air as shown traversing an annular chamber surrounding the discharge chamber 36 and being delivered near the discharge valve 30 through ducts 39. During the suction stroke of the piston 55, the cylinder is withdrawn by ring friction, from engagement with the closure washer 26 and descends until arrested by a shoulder 42 coming into contact with the washer 45. The air current is, under these conditions, free to sweep over and across the cylinder head as well as supplying air for the suction stroke. The initiation of the compression stroke raises the working cylinder until it. contacts with the washer 26.
