Shaft couplings; securing together machine elements for transmitting rotary motion. - An electrically insulating coupling for connecting shafts or other rotary bodies comprises radial projections 10 on one shaft &c. encircled by curved lugs 3, 4 on a plate 5. rigid insulating blocks 8 of micanite &c. being interposed between the projections and lugs. The plate is formed in two parts secured together by bolts 7 to clamp the blocks in position. The blocks 8 and the surfaces with which they engage are formed doubly inclined as shown to secure the shafts &c. against relative axial movement. More than two projections 10 may be arranged on the shaft 1 in star form to engage corresponding lugs on the plate 5, which may be secured to a flange 9 on a second shaft by bolting, spigot-and-socketing, or dowelling, or by flexible coupling-means. The face of the plate 5 is machined for securing to the flange 9 after the insulating coupling is bolted up and, if desired, the coupling may be baked and the bolts 7 re-tightened if necessary before the coupling is used.
