Hollow. - ware. - An apparatus for welding parts forming hollow spaces, such as refrigerators, consists of two rotatable jaws relatively movable axially, one of the jaws having a passage for leading into the hollow space a substance such as nitrogen or hydrogen to prevent oxidation. The parts 50, 51 of the refrigerator casing to be welded at a and on which is mounted a cooling jacket 52 to be welded at b, c. are clamped between jaws 10, 11, which are similarly shaped so that the work may be turned end for end. The jaw 10 is rotatably mounted on ball bearings 15 in a shaft 13, which is pressed forward by a spring 20 and can be withdrawn by a hand wheel 19. The jaw 11 is screwed into a shaft 12 having a passage 25 for the supply of nitrogen &c. The shaft 21 is intermittently rotated by a pawl and ratchet mechanism 30, 23, 40. The pawl is controlled by a spring 39 and is connected to a lever 33 through which passes a rod 36 pressed down by a pedal 37 and raised by a spring 35. The downward movement of the lever is limited by a stop 38. Specification 267,124 is referred to.
