Abstract
800,885. Vices with quick release. STEEL NUT & J. HAMPTON, Ltd. March 13, 1957 [March 13, 1956], No. 7773/56. Class 61. A hand operated sliding-jaw vice has a quick release mechanism that is actuated by a small unscrewing motion of its main screw spindle 19 ; this motion rotates a one-way clutch assembly 34-36 carrying a finger 42 which turns a blade 30 to disengage a half-nut 26 from the threads of the spindle 19. The vice comprises a body 10 carrying a fixed jaw 12 and a sliding jaw 13 in which the spindle 19 is housed rotatably but secured against end-motion. The sliding jaw is carried on the forward ends of two spaced parallel bars 14 which are slidably guided in two bores (not shown) in the body 10 and which have their rear ends connected by a bar 18 that also provides a bearing for the other end of the spindle. The half-nut 26 is anchored against axial movement by lugs 27 but can be moved vertically relative to the spindle, for which purpose it has a tail portion 28 that engages with the blade 30. The sleeves 34 and 36 are slidably and rotatably mounted on the spindle and the sleeve 36 transmits rotation to the sleeve 34 in the unscrewing sense only through dog teeth 35. The outer end of the sleeve 36 has two opposed square dog teeth 37 engaging the projecting ends of a pin 38 which passes through the spindle 19, thereby providing one third of a turn free movement between the spindle and the sleeves. A spring 39 urges the spring assembly into close contact with the pin 38 and the sleeve 36 comes the finger 42 which co-operates with a lever 33 on the blade 30. Rotation of the blade 30 against a coil spring 32 withdraws the half-nut from the spindle and frees the moving jaw of the vice for quick adjustment. On release of the lever 33 the spring 32 counter rotates the blade and maintains the half-nut in contact with the spindle.
