820,874. Fishing reels. SHAKESPEARE CO. Dec. 20, 1956 [Oct. 4, 1956], No. 38869/56. Class 48. A fishing reel comprises a fixed spool 4 mounted on a frame 1, a shaft 6 mounted for axial and rotational movement in an axial opening in the spool, a hood 8 overlying the forward end of the spool and having an axial opening 9 for the line 15, a spooling member 7 mounted on the forward end of the shaft and adapted to be moved against the action of a spring 20 from a rear position adjacent the spool 4 to a forward position in which it clamps the line 15 against the hood 8, a pick-up 22 mounted on the spooling member 7 and adapted to be moved against the action of a spring 25 from an inoperative position within the spooling member to an operative position where it extends laterally from the spooling member, by a fixed cam 30 disposed adjacent the spool and engageable by the pick-up on rotation of the spooling member when the latter is in its rearward position. The shaft 6 is mounted in a bushing 3 on the frame 1 and is rotated by a gear 11 slidably and non-rotatably mounted on the shaft and engaged with a gear 12 rotated by a crank. A pivoted lever 16 having a leaf spring 18 abutting the rear end of the shaft is manually actuated to move the shaft forwardly against the action of the return spring 20. The line pick-up 22 comprises a lever pivoted on the rear face of the spooling member 7 and having a finger 24 adapted to be projected through an aperture in the wall of the spooling member. The cam 30 for projecting the pick-up comprises a semi-cylindrical extension of the end 31 of the bushing 3. When the spooling member is moved rearwardly by the spring 20 and is rotated simultaneously, the pick-up 22 first engages the cam 30 and then moves on to the end 31 of the bushing.
