In jointing the cathode insulator B to the metallic vessel A of a mercury-vapour rectifier, a ribbed washer E of steel or other hard metal is sandwiched between two layers C, D of plastic material such as asbestos or lead or aluminium or other soft metal, the joint faces of the parts A, B being plane and the whole clamped together by bolts &c.
