Treadle mechanism.-In a pedal propelled vehicle such as a toy motor car, pedal levers approximatelv vertical drive the wheels through mechanism such as a oneway clutch and spring-returned chains and the effective stroke of the pedals is varied so as to obtain variations in the speed ratio. Independent U-shaped pedals b, one for each foot, oscillate about an axis b<1> and operate the real axle through links k connected to chains l passing round one-way clutches g, the chains being tautened by springs m. The effective point of connection of the links k to the pedals is varied by links d which at their lower ends are adjustable along the arms of the U-shaped pedals, this adjustment being effected by raising or lowering the U-shaped lever c pivoted at c<1> and having an operating-handle c<2> and a locking-rack c<3>. The one-way clutches are fixed to a tube h slidable on the axle to engage or disengage a driving clutch.
