WILLIAMMOIR, or cnrcneo, ILLINOIS.
TOY VEHICLE.-
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WVILLIAM Mom, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,
in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Toy Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy vehicles and has for its object the provision of a novel pedal operated drive mechanism therefor.
An important and more specific object is I the provision of a drive mechanism including pedal members connected by a lazy tongs 7 construction with the crank shaft carrying the sprockets which transmits the motlve power to the driving axle of the vehicle.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and 1nexpensive in manufacture, easy to operate,
which will be novel and attractive to a child,
and which will be a general improvement n the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in View, the invention consists in the details of construction to be herelnafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a childs vehicle formed to embody my invention,
Fig. 2 is a plan view, V Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of my drive mechanism,
Fig. 1 is a sectional view therethrough on the line 4.l of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates the body of the vehicle which may be formed'to simulate an automobile or other type of vehicle attract ve to the eye of a child, and the letter B designates the dirigible or steering wheels. The letter C designates the rear axle which carries the driving wheels D. u V g In carrying out my invention I provlde a pair of plates 10, formed of metal, secured beneath the body A at the desiredlocatlon between the front and rear wheels and each plate is provided with a longitudinal slot 11. J ournaled through the plates 10 at one end thereof, is a shaft 12 which has its ends rovided with cranks 13 preferably exten'ing' Specification of Letters Patent. Patented A 17, 1

construction, that is at the end pivoted to the plate, the other endmost link is elongated 1 and angularly bent to provide a pedal 18 engageable by the foot of the operator. it will of course be understood that the construction is identically the same at both sides of the vehicle except that the cranks 13 extend in opposite directions so that to operate the device it will be necessary to press the pedals 18 alternately.
In-the operationof the device it will be seen that when an operator is seated within a vehicle with his feet upon the pedals and presses the pedals alternately, the result will be the elongation and contraction of the lazy tongs construction at each side of the vehicle, the bolts 16 riding within the slots 11 and the pitman 17 transmitting the motion to the shaft 12. A suitable sprocket 19 is secured upon' the shaft 12 and a chain 20 is trained about the sprockets 19 and the sprocket on the rear axle C whereby the motion will be transmitted to the rear axle C and wheels D.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simple drive mechanism which will be unique and which will be particularly attractive to the eye of a childwhile being highly efiicient in proor the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim: I
1. In a toy vehicle including a body, front wheels therefor, a rear axle and wheels thereon, a drive mechanism comprising a pair of plates secured beneath the body and having longitudinal slots, a crank shaft journaled through said plates and formed with crank portions, a chain and'sprocket connection between said crank shaft and the rear axle, a lazy tongs disposed against each plate and having one forward link pivoted thereon and V the other forward link provided with a pedal, means connecting the rear ends of each of the lazy tongs, said connecting means being slidable Within said slot, and a pitrnanconnected with said slidable connection and with the adjacent crank portion of the crank shaft. e r
2. In a toy vehicle includinga body, front Wheels therefor, a rear axle, and Wheels car-- ried thereby, drive mechanism comprising a pair of plates secured Within said body and having longitudinal slots, a counter-shaft journaled through said plate, connecting means between said counter shaft and rear axle whereby to impart rotary movement of. the former topthe latter, crank portions formed on said counter-shaft, a lazy tongs associated with each plate andhaving one forward linkthereof pivoted upon the plate and the other forward link prolon ed .for-
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
WILLIAM MOIR.
