Abstract
399,926. Treadle mechanism. MULLETT, H. D., 72, South Street, Ponders End, Enfield, Middlesex. May 31, 1932, No. 15454. [Class 136 (ii).] In propelling-mechanism for cycles &c. of the kind in which a unidirectional motion is imparted to the driven wheel or wheels by means of treadles on opposite sides of the cycle connected by chains or cables to a pair of free-wheel mechanisms on the driven spindle, the treadles 16, 17 are in the form of substantially horizontal bars interconnected for alternate elevation and depression, such movements being of relatively small extent, and adapted to receive the rider's feet at any point of their length whereby the effective leverage can be varied. In the construction shown the treadles 16, 17 are hinged on stub shafts 18, 19 below the rear driven spindle 1, and at their forward ends are connected by stirrups 14, 15 and cranks 12, 13 to the parts 5a, 5b of a divided spindle 5 carrying segmental toothed wheels 7, 8. Attached to these wheels and passing around them, around the toothed wheels 3, 4 of the free-wheel mechanisms, and around a guide wheel 9, is a continuous chain in three sections 11a, 11b, 11c, which serves both to drive the spindle 1 and also to provide the interconnection between the treadles 16, 17. In a modification, two independent driving- chains are employed, and the parts 5a, 5b of the spindle 5 are interconnected by bevel gearing to cause one treadle to rise as the other is depressed, while in a further modification the front wheels of a four-wheel vehicle are the driven wheels.
