Abstract

The scooter has its rear wheel 3 rotated by the up and down arcuate motion of two treadles operated by the respective legs of a user. Each treadle has a pivoted member 4, 5 coupled to a respective crank 6, 7, the cranks being in opposed radial directions on either side of a chainwheel 11 coupled to the rear wheel 3 by a chain.

Description

TREADLE SCOOTER THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A TREADLE SCOOTER SCOOTERS ARE WELL KNOWN RECREATIONAL VEHICLES OR TOYS WHICH USUALLY HAVE TWO WHEELS WITH A PLATFORM BETWEEN THEM ON WHICH THE USER STANDS UPRIGHT. PROPULSION IS BY MEANS OF A HANDLEBAR AND FORK ARRANGEMENT TO THE FRONT WHEEL.
AS THE ONLY MEANS OF PROPULSION, PUSHING AGAINST THE GROUND IS VERY TIRING AND LIMITS THE SUSTAINABLE SPEED OF THE SCOOTER.
ACCORDING TO THE PRESENT INVENTION WILL NOW BE DESCRIBED BY WAY OF EXAMPLE WITH REFERENCE TO THEACCOMPANYING DRAWING IN WHICH: FIGURE) SHOWS A SIDE VIEW OF THE WHOLE SCOOTER INCLUDING TREADLES.
FIGURE 2 SHOWS A SIDE VIEW OF THE TREADLES WITH A ROD-AND-CRANK ARRANGEMENT TO THE REAR WHEEL.
FIGURE 3 SHOWS A TOP VIEW OF THE SCOOTER.
AS SHOWN IN FIGURE I THE CENTRAL FIXED PLATFORM THAT NORMALLY EXISTS ON SCOOTERS HAS BEEN REPLACED BY TWO TREADLES I AND 2, WHICH AXIS AT A POINT NEAR TO THE REAR WHEEL AXLE 3.
FIGURE 2 SHOWS THAT THE UNDERSIDE OF EACH TREADLE IS ATTACHED TO A ROD 4 AND 5, WHICH IS ALSO ATTACHED TO A CRANK 6 AND 7, WHICH ARE SHORTER THAN THE RODS.
THE CRANKS POINT IN OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS AND ARE MOUNTED ON EITHER SIDE OF AN AXLE UNIT 8 ATTACHED TO THE CENTRAL FRAME OF THE SCOOTER 10 IN A DESIGN KNOWN TO BICYCLES. THIS HAS A CHAIN DRIVE ARRANGEMENT TO THE REAR WHEEL 9 IN A DESIGN KNOWN TO BICYCLES.
THE AXIS POINT OF THE ROD ATTACHMENT TO THE TREADLES 11 AND 12 ARE FARTHER FROM THE AXIS POINT OF THE TREADLES 3 THAN THE AXIS POINT OF THE AXLE 8. THIS MEANS THAT WHEN EITHER TREADLE IS DEPRESSED TO ITS LOWEST POINT THE OPPOSITE CRANK POINTS FORWARD SUCH THAT THE UPPER TREADLE IS DEPRESSED THE CRANK TURNS FORWARD AND DRIVES THE REAR WHEEL.

Claims (4)

  1. CLAIMS I A SCOOTER WITH TWO TREADLES (OR FOOT PLATFORMS) WHICH RAISE AND LOWER ALTERNATELY WHEN MADE TO DO SO BY LEG ACTION OF THE USER WHICH DRIVE THE REAR WHEEL AND PROPELS THE SCOOTER.
  2. 2 A SCOOTER AS CLAIMED IN CLAIM I WHERE THE UP AND DOWN MOVEMENT OF THE TREADLES IS CONVERTED TO A CIRCULA MOVEMENT OF THE REAR WHEEL VIA A RACK-AND-PINION ARRANGEMENT.
  3. 3 A SCOOTER AS CLAIMED IN CLAIM 1 WHERE THE UP AND DOWN MOVEMENT OF THE TREADLES IS CONVERTED TO A CIRCULAR MOVEMENT OF THE REAR WHEEL VIA A ROD-AND-CRANK ARRANGEMENT.
  4. 4 A SCOOTER AS CLAIMED IN CLAIM I WHERE THE TREADLES RAISE AND LOWER IN A PARTIAL ARC THE AXIS OF WHICH IS ON OR NEAR THE CENTRE OF THE REAR WHEEL AND WHERE THE ROTARY ACTION OF THE TREADLE MOVEMENT IN THE PARTIAL ARC CAUSES THE REAR WHEEL TO TURN VIA A GEAR SYSTEM IN OR BESIDE THE REAR WHEEL.
