Transformers. - Cores for transformers and other electrical machines are built up of a number of composite plates, each plate consisting of a number of thin laminations united by binding material, preferably a resinous composition of infusible and insoluble character, applied to the surface of the laminations before assembly. The laminations may be covered, with paper, or the layer of scale remaining after rolling may be relied on together with the binding material to afford the required insulation. The laminations may be built up of strips and waste iron. In assembling the composite plates to form the core of a transformer, the yokes c and core limbs e are interleaved at the joints, and the abutting faces of the members in each layer are shaped as shown to prevent displacement of the yoke members. Light clamping means are applied at the joints f, and the bolt holes are elongated so as not to interfere with the application of clamping pressure in the direction of the axis of the limbs e.
