Abstract
268,731. Hofmann, C. April 3, 1926, [Convention date]. Testing physical qualities of materials.-Comprising a process for testing the ring travellers for spinning machines in which the traveller is first gauged for dimensions and width of gap, is then bent up within the range for forcing it on to the race ring, and then further bent up, the breakage point or point at which permanent set access being indicated or recorded. The traveller 1 shaped as in Fig. 1 is placed with its gap over two small lugs on two jaws 4, 5 pivoted on a fulcrum 6. The short jaw 4 is fixed to the base board 7 while the longer jaw is extended to form a lever 5 having an handle 8 and carrying a recording pencil which projects through a slot 14 to engage a paper sheet carried by a slide 12. A slot 16 is also provided to accommodate two adjustable stops 10, 11. The lever 5 is brought against the stop 10 and the stop 11 first placed at that point corresponding to an opening of the gap in the traveller sufficient to force it on to the race ring. The lever is then slowly moved up to the stop 11. If the traveller cracks before this point is reached it is too hard. If on moving the lever back to its initial position the traveller does not return to its basic form it is too soft. On releasing the stop 11 and moving the lever to the limit of the slot the traveller should break and if it does not break it is too soft. By reading off on the scale 9 or the second sheet the point at which breakage occurs may be observed. In order that this point may be determined accurately, two further forms are shown in which the jaw 4 is not fixed but held against a stop by an adjustably loaded spring or lever system and weight pan. On breakage in these forms the jaw is automatically returned to initial position.
