Abstract

268,372. Koppers Co., (Assignees of Rose, H. J., and Hill, W. H.). March 25, 1926, [Convention date]. Mineral oils, extracting; liquid fuel.-A solution of coal in oil is obtained by dissolving coal in water-gas tar, coal tar- or other cyclic hydrocarbon oil heated to 200-400‹ C. The coal dissolves without decomposition mineral impurities remaining undissolved and being separated by decantation. The coal can be reprecipitated by the addition of light oils e.g. benzol in which it is insoluble. The product may be used as a liquid fuel or may be allowed to solidify and formed into briquettes &c, Mixtures of various kinds of coal can be obtained by dissolving the different coals in oil and reprecipitating the mixture. The process may be used for reducing the sulphur and ash contents of coals e.g. a coal containing about 9 per cent of ash and 3 per cent sulphur was heated with water gas tar distillate in a jacketed vessel heated to 270-320‹ C. The solution was extracted with benzene to remove undissolved material and then with ligroin to reprecipitate the coal, which on analysis was found to contain 46 per cent ash and 1.39 per cent sulphur. Further sulphur can be removed by treating the solution with copper turnings or black copper oxide. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 131,588.
