Mineral oils, extracting.-In a process for obtaining benzines, lubricating oils &c. from solid carbonaceous materials in which the materials are first disintegrated by treatment with solvent media boiling above 10‹ C., and the products obtained a:re then converted into the valuable substances required by further heat treatment, e.g. hydrogenation, the first stage is effected at temperatures as high as possible without causing decomposition of the initial material and at pressures corresponding to the vapour pressure of the solvent at the temperatures in question. The disintegration treatment is preferably conducted in stages so that the temperature used in each step lies close to the decomposition temperature of the residual portion of the material. 500 gs. powdered gas carbon are treated with 1000 c.cms. tetraline in four extractions at 320, 350, 380, 400‹ C. Over 70 per cent of the carbon passes into solution and after separation of ash and removal of solvent a pitch-like glittering mass is obtained which melts when heated and is suitable for conversion into benzines &c.
